Home Energy Advantage was started in January 2008 with the goal of providing a service that will help provide individual home owners, builders, and real estate professionals with technology that will lead to more energy efficient, safe, and comfortable homes. The intent is to provide those features that save energy, help the environment, and lower the overall cost of home ownership.
The principal in Home Energy Advantage is Tom Butler, a registered professional mechanical engineer in the states of Colorado, New Mexico, and South Carolina. He is also certified as a home energy rater through RESNET, a national standards making body for building energy efficiency rating systems. After receiving two engineering degrees and spending many years designing, modeling, and testing mechanical systems (including rockets, satellites, nuclear reactor components, and various weapon systems), Tom has started his second career as a home energy consultant. Tom's years of experience are invaluable because the heat transfer physics that applies to rockets and weapons also applies to homes. Tom has also made extensive energy related improvements to four homes that he has owned.
In performing ratings and audits we use the latest technology, software, and equipment to evaluate each home. The equipment includes blower doors, duct blasters, and infrared cameras that provide important technical details about the energy use status of the home. Results from the software analysis give the customer details concerning the home's energy use and leads to the ability to determine where the customer can make the most efficient investment to lower costs and the impact on the environment. For instance, should the customer replace windows in an existing home (very expensive) or blow more insulation in the attic (less expensive). The results can also provide important details about heating and cooling equipment that can lead to long-term savings.
